“Earth X” indicates an unreal, alternate world from our own, in vague but fantastic terms. It’s natural that both DC Comics and Marvel Comics have used the phrase to designate alternate worlds and futures in their comics (though the usage here is meant to reference none of their intellectual property or products).
Earth x is also a riff on Thomas Pavel’s logic of fictional worlds.
