Celebrities We Have Seen

by Jason Craft on October 1st, 2003

Kentucky had no celebrities. 22 years there, and my only sightings were Albert Finney, Rick Pitino, and “Ray” from Dallas. And, since Rick Pitino doesn’t count in Kentucky, and we actually saw “Ray” in Hawaii, that leaves Albert Finney.

Austin is lousy with celebrities, though. I’ve been here 8 years, and I’ve seen:

  • Edmund White. Spent a whole day with Ed when he was on a book tour.
  • Matthew McConaughey. At Whole Foods. Not as tall as you might expect.
  • Dan Rather. At Threadgill’s.
  • Charlie Sexton, of course. All the time. I’m surprised Charlie hasn’t walked into my office yet.
  • The Enigma, who’s tattooed all over with blue puzzle pieces, has subcutaneous horns on his skull, and appeared on “X-Files” and a couple of other shows. At Little City, with his wife (or girlfriend — could not verify marital status, only affection), who’s been modded to look like a cat.
  • Lisa Loeb. At Guero’s.
  • Willie Nelson. At Curra’s. He and Mike said “hello” to one another. Cannot verify, but he was with someone who looked a lot like Emmylou Harris.
  • Robin Williams. Walking out of Starbucks, downtown.
  • Tommy Lee Jones. Last night, at Fleming’s.

I think there might be more that I’ve forgotten. If I remember more, I’ll tell you.

P.S. My boyfriend has a Ph.D. now.
